Get a grip

To the editor:

This is regarding the rec center, although I prefer the spelling “wreck.” It is just getting more amusing as the days go by.

Why don’t we just call it the “Wreck Center Theme Park,” build a couple of hotels, parking structures and a lazy river around the perimeter. Fence it all in, add a few rides and charge $75 to $100 a day.

Then we wouldn’t have to worry about who would pay for landscaping, gardeners, a couple hundred employees with benefits, the gas, electric and phones. Not to forget the grounds upkeep, separate from gardeners, the equipment purchases and upkeep, taxes and other unthought-of incidentals. Then maybe taxes wouldn’t have to be raised on all of us not-so-wealthy retirees and all of the other residents without an abundance of  extra cash.

Let us get a grip here and remember “want” as compared to “need.”

"Let us get a grip here and remember 'want' as compared to 'need.'"

Excellent suggestion, but one that went out the window a long time ago. Since the mid-'70s, Lawrence has been ruled by small interest groups that have a pet project, keep pushing it until someone finally says "yes," inflict it on the public and then dump the future operation and maintenance costs on the taxpayers forever.

Great letter, but I'm afraid the writer is tilting at windmills.

With no long term projection planning (read yesterday's article about the absence of a five-year plan since '08) it's no wonder pet projects become a reality

The secret is to stuff information sheets into the water bills to let you know about a pre determined outcome.
