Lawrence man, 24, pleads no contest to aggravated battery

A 24-year-old Lawrence man pleaded no contest Monday to aggravated battery in connection with an October altercation in downtown Lawrence.

Anthony M. Bassett agreed Monday not to fight allegations that he punched another 24-year-old Lawrence man in the face about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 19 in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street. The victim fell to the ground and suffered a broken nose.

Prosecutor David Melton, a chief assistant district attorney, said in court Bassett had approached the man and started a verbal argument with him.

Bassett faces anywhere from 11 months to 34 months in prison. However, unless he has two prior felonies against a person, he’s expected to qualify for probation. Defense attorney Branden Smith said Bassett had agreed to undergo an evaluation and was expected to follow recommendations for anger management treatment.

District Judge Kay Huff is scheduled to sentence Bassett March 6.
