Explosive response team called to report of suspicious object just east of Lawrence; part of old natural gas line determined to be safe

Law enforcement officials gather Wednesday morning east of the Santa Fe railroad tracks just north of the former Farmland property after they received a report of a suspicious object.

A bomb squad from Overland Park was called to examine a suspicious object Wednesday morning in an area east of Lawrence, but it turned out to be nothing dangerous, Douglas County Undersheriff Steve Hornberger said.

It was an older piece of a natural gas line that had been replaced.

“The original call we received was that it might be an explosive device,” Hornberger said. “We took appropriate safety measures and had the Overland Park explosive team respond, to make sure that there was not a danger to the public or anyone else.”

The device was in the 1600 block of North 1500 Road, which is the extension of 15th Street east of Lawrence, and the road was closed initially Wednesday morning.

At 9:45 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s officers, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper, firefighters and a representative of Atmos Energy appeared to be examining something at a distance, south of the road and west of the railroad tracks in the area.

Jim Bartling, an Atmos Energy spokesman, said the suspicious object was found near the area where the company receives natural gas for distribution.
