Cans count

To the editor:

Does it really make a difference to recycle? In Lawrence, Kansas, it does! That is because when you make the effort to recycle a small or large bag of aluminum cans at one of the Cans for the Community blue “can houses” you are giving back to others right here in our community.

Lawrence residents have made it possible for Cans for the Community to recycle a total of 6.3 million aluminum cans. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised from recycling those cans have gone to local nonprofit organizations, and we are pleased to announce that we just donated $1,000 to the Willow Domestic Violence Center bringing the total given away since 2005 to $85,000!

Recycling is a hot topic right now. The city of Lawrence is studying new ways to deal with trash pickup. We support recycling of all materials but we hope that whatever is decided, you will continue to make the effort to take your aluminum cans to one of our can house locations so we can continue to help non-profits in need of funds.

Check out our website for our can house locations and to see the list of non-profits who have received donations.

Thank you for your continued support, and please keep those aluminum cans coming!
