City swimmers/divers plentiful at state

? Between Free State and Lawrence high schools, there will be at least one city athlete in almost every event at the Class 6A state swimming and diving meet this year.

The state meet will get under way at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Hummer Sports Complex, with diving prelims. Firebirds Dan Krieger and Trevor Hillis are among the 28 divers scheduled to compete.

The swimmers from both schools will have to wait until 4 p.m. Friday for their prelims, and some are seeded at or near the top in their events.

LHS senior Zach Andregg enters with the best time in the 50 freestyle (21.64) and 500 free (4:45.78), while Free State junior Ben Sloan is the top seed (51.11) in the 100 butterfly.

Sloan is seeded second in the 200 IM, and his teammate, FSHS sophomore Canaan Campbell, is the No. 2 seed in the 500 free (3.21 seconds behind Andregg).

Lawrence’s 200 free relay team of Adam Edmonds, Dylan Orth, Reid Hildenbrand, Andregg and alternate Noel Fisher are seeded fourth. The same swimmers are the No. 6 seed in the 400 free relay.

Campbell is seeded fifth in the 200 free, and he will be swimming with Connor Munk, Nick Becker and Sloan as the No. 5 seed in the 400 free relay. Free State’s alternates for the relay are Josh Saathoff and Hunter Robinson.

Free State junior Munk will be seeded seventh in the 100 backstroke, 11th in the 200 free and team with Kyle Yoder, Sloan and Campbell as the No. 7 seed in the 200 medley relay. Robinson, Saathoff and Noah Benham are alternates for that Firebirds relay unit.

Lawrence is seeded 18th in the 200 medley relay, with Edmonds, Jacob Pfeifer, Nathan Evers, Orth and alternate Fisher.

Yoder, a Free State sophomore, is seeded 23rd in the 100 breast.

The 100 free is the only event lacking a city swimmer.

Diving finals are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Swimming finals are set to start at 3 p.m. Saturday.
