Here’s a breakdown of sex crimes reported in 2011:

The true number of sex crimes committed is difficult to gauge, as sex crimes are high on the list of under-reported crimes, said Richard Felson, a sociologist at Pennsylvania State University and co-author of a 2005 study on the topic.

Felson said sex crimes are less reported than physical assault but probably more often reported than petty property crimes.

On the Kansas University campus, sex crimes reported to the KU Public Safety are rare. Between 2008 and 2011, six rapes and seven other sexual assaults were reported to campus police, including two sexual batteries in 2011. Click here for a look at a Lawrence sex crime map.
