Accident on I-70 causes wrecks, fuel spill

An injury accident on Interstate 70 between Lecompton and Lawrence on Friday caused one person to be extricated from his vehicle plus two further accidents, traffic delays and a 100-plus-gallon diesel fuel spill on the highway.

Kansas Turnpike Authority Trooper Craig Corbett said a Chevy Suburban got a flat tire and stopped in the center lane headed east at about 6:20 p.m. A Chevy Malibu then hit the Suburban and the Malibu’s driver, a 40-year-old Lawrence man, had to be cut out of the car. The driver and two passengers received only minor injuries, he said.

Traffic slowed around the scene of this accident and, at about 7 p.m., a Parkville woman veered into the left rear side of a semi-truck, rupturing its gas tanks and dislodging its batteries. She was not hurt in the accident, KTA Trooper Alex Petigna said.

Shortly after this accident, a pickup-truck driver slid on the diesel fuel on the road and ran into the median. He was not hurt.
