A 36-year-old Lawrence man was charged with aggravated assault Friday in Douglas County District Court, accused of pistol-whipping a person two weeks ago at The Pool Room, 925 Iowa St.

Sunthala S. Chanhkhiao was arrested by Lawrence police who responded to a disturbance at the pool hall about 11:30 p.m Dec. 14. During an argument between two people, police said, a suspect pointed a firearm in the face of a victim and injured them by striking them with it. The firearm was recovered and entered into evidence.

Chanhkhiao was released on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court again Jan. 2.

Pistol whipping in a pool hall is just damn stupid. Pool cues are readily available and just as effective, and doesn't always result in the cops being called. Pulling out a gun? Now that's a different story.

Sure, that's all well and good at the pool hall, but what do you assault people with at the skating rink?

Somebody should take a flyswatter to you.

Fly, don't ever watch the Daily Show or the Colbert Report. Those shows will make you very angry.

Won't matter he was in a bar.

Since enactment of a new Lawrence ordinance (City Code section 14-408-- March 2006) governing possession of firearms within 200ft of a bar (which effectively translates to just about all of downtown Lawrence), users of the Range should be aware that firearms carried into the Community Building must be unloaded; magazines of semi-auto firearms should be empty, as a loaded magazine in proximity to the firearm for which it is designed may be considered a loaded weapon. From the Douglas County Rifle/Pistol Club rules. Maybe changed since 2006 but is still in the rules on website today.

The Lawrence ordinance does not apply to people with a concealed carry permit. Of course the community building is marked as no concealed carry so you still need to carry the firearm in a closed container with an unloaded magazine.

True, I use the range (and have a CCH permit), the door is marked. I just bring everything in in range bag. They mention this during the safety training at the range too. The link I posted above applies to CCH permit holders only. It's in the title of the article.

If I understand all the laws correctly, one could actually open carry a firearm into the Community Center range and not violate any laws. However, I know the range likes to keep a low profile and they would probably not let you back if they saw you doing that.

I remember reading the changes to the CCH law when they came out, a lot of people still don't understand them. Essentially, unless it's federal property or it's marked (correctly), you are free to conceal carry there.

Usually if your smart enough to spend the time and money to get a permit, your not getting into fights at a pool hall.

replace "smart" with "paranoid"

$5,000 bail????!!!! This guy was walking around with a gun and is violent. And he is out on the street!!! What is wrong with this picture. Keep this guy locked up!!! His name suggests he may be a flight risk?

rtwngr 2 years ago

That's profiling and profiling is wrong.

FarneyMac 2 years ago

There should be no bail and he should get the death penalty. Obviously, that would be fitting for the crime, right?

KSManimal 2 years ago

What's wrong with this picture is clearly alcohol. You rarely find this sort of behavior in a room full of sober people. Yet, watch for the calls to ban guns, and not a single word about booze (he said, with only moderate sarcasm).

Someone must have used the word "Shenanigans" too many times.

Rex Hargis 2 years ago

Not too many people remember Shenanigans. Or the Yuk Down.

Jean1183 2 years ago

I'm old enough to remember the Yuk Down (and the Yuk Up). Must be too old for Shenanigans. LOL

Atleast he had enough sense to not smoke the guy.

Smoking in bars is not allowed.

---so, where's this guy from? apparently he's not WT.
wonder if this guy's getting probation too.

This story is just proof that we need to loosen the concealed carry law to not allow bars to restrict having guns in their bar, even if they put up the State approved sign. Then go further by allowing assault rifles, to make sure that the criminals never have the upper hand in a gun incident, such as this.

Imagine how much better this scene would have worked out if at least one of the guys who were attacked would have been able to fight back with assault rifles?

Imagine how much safer you would feel at a bar when you know that anyone can bring in a gun if they want to? I would finally feel safe enough to bring my kids!

This would have turned out so much better had a paranoid CCr pulled his gat and bullets were flying nillywilly as people tried to enjoy their holiday break.

msezdsit 2 years ago

I guess you at least give the guy credit for only piatol whipping and not shooting the victims. However, if your going to brandish a firearm without discharging it your inviting someone else who doesn't know your not going to fire your weapon to fire theirs just to be sure.

Wait, I thought the Pool Room was closed and is now Barnyard Brewery? Is the Pool Room still there too? Or is it all the same place?

Ian_Cummings 2 years ago

The Pool Room is still there. Barnyard Brewery is at the same location.

Has any gun hater ever stopped to think that if concealed weapons permit holders really wanted to use their guns they simply have to go out at night looking for trouble? I don't know or care if the guy in the story was one, doubtful, but if he was he deserves to have his license shredded. Most of us are smart enough to avoid places where trouble may arise, and can sidestep it if it does with out relying on a pistol to talk for us.
