Letter: Heartless act

To the editor:

Driving to work last week, I drove over a hill to see a car stopped in the middle of the road. In the moment the car drove away, I saw what I first thought were little birds in the road. As I came closer, I realized they were two very sad looking little Chihuahuas. They were trembling in the cold, clearly lost and confused. When I stopped and opened my car door, they jumped in. When I picked them up to carry them into the shelter, I realized there was fecal matter caked on their tummies and legs. They were skin and bones. Their little ribs and each vertebra were clearly visible.

Why would a person not take them to a shelter long before they reached this pitiful state? How could a person a dump a 3-pound dog on a dirt road without a house in sight? They are very tiny, very sweet little black and brown Chihuahuas. They will be available for adoption in three days at the Topeka shelter.

I made a conscious decision to protect those vulnerable little dogs. I am still struggling with not being able to follow that car to get the tag number. Individuals with so little regard for animals are unlikely to have more regard for people. I can only hope that their conscience will provide them with many sleepless nights.
