Letter: Calendar error

To the editor:

Just for the record, the Mike Luckovich cartoon syndicated to the Dec. 22 issue of the Lawrence Journal-World adds yet another item to the already sizeable pile of trash on the Maya calendar. The cartoon depicts the Aztec, or Nahuatl “Piedra del Sol,” indeed used for calendaric purposes in the highlands of Mexico around the 15th and 16th centuries, and thus it is not Maya. The geography is off by about 700 miles, and the time is off by more than 1,000 years. It is as if Shakespeare was used as an example of French 20th century literature, or if Hemingway was depicted as a good example of Irish Renaissance poetry.

Not that most people care, I guess.
