Lawrence group 100 Good Women receives $5,000 Walmart award
A Lawrence philanthropic group has received a $5,000 grant from Walmart to help out area people in need.
The Lawrence group 100 Good Women will receive the gift. Founded about 16 years ago, it’s a loose network of philanthropic-minded Lawrencians who provide help for people in the community.
The people the group helps are primarily women, but also some men, who’ve “fallen through the cracks” of the social-service system or had a need come up, said Jennie Washburn, a member of the group’s board.
Washburn said possible uses for the grant would include grocery or gasoline gift cards for people struggling financially, or to help toward a new storage unit.
The grant was part of Walmart’s “12 Days of Giving” holiday-season campaign, during which it has given grants to 140 groups across the country totaling $1.5 million.
