A man was rescued from a house fire Thursday afternoon in the 2000 block of Barker Avenue. Police first responded to the fire about 11:50 a.m. after an emergency call reporting the house was on fire and a man was trapped in the basement.
Sgt. Trent McKinley of the Lawrence Police Department said two police officers found the house filled with smoke and intense heat and located the man, who was suffering from smoke inhalation, in the basement. The officers helped him out of the house and he was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Fire crews from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical extinguished the fire by 12:15 p.m. The police officers were examined for smoke inhalation and were released.
Fire and Medical officials reported the Douglas County Red Cross is offering help to the displaced occupants of the house.
The cause of the fire and extent of the damage are being investigated.
