City football preps honored

The honors keep pouring in for the city’s top high school football players in the wake of a fantastic fall.

Free State High senior Cody Stanclift (offensive and defensive lineman) and Lawrence senior Brad Strauss (quarterback and defensive back) both were named to the Top 11 by the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital-Journal.

Both the Firebirds (10-2) and Lions (8-3) had multiple players on the All-Class 6A teams from the two state newspapers, as well. Stanclift, Strauss, Lawrence senior defensive lineman Kharon Brown and Free State senior defensive back Kyle McFarland all made the first team in the Eagle and Capital-Journal.

Eight players received honorable mention from the Eagle: Free State’s Joe Dineen (defensive back), Tye Hughes (receiver), McFarland (quarterback), Corban Schmidt (linebacker) and Fred Wyatt (offensive lineman), and Lawrence’s Erick Mayo (receiver and defensive back), Strauss (defensive back) and Will Thompson (receiver).

Six of those players also received honorable mention from the Capital-Journal: Dineen, Hughes, Mayo, Schmidt, Thompson and Wyatt.
