Suspect in Lawrence police chase skips court date

A 35-year-old Lawrence man accused of leading police on a vehicle chase in March did not show up for his court hearing Thursday.

According to court records, District Judge Paula Martin issued a $2,500 bench warrant for Billy Joe Johnson’s arrest.

Johnson was charged in March with fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving on a suspended license, two counts of theft, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident and several traffic infractions. Johnson, who was out of jail on bond, also faces a separate burglary case.

Lawrence police said they briefly chased a stolen vehicle just after 5 p.m. March 1 after a bank employee in the 900 block of Iowa reported suspicious activity. The chase went through a nearby residential area between Ninth and 15th streets before police called it off due to rush-hour traffic in the area. Minutes later the car, allegedly stolen from Jefferson County, struck a tree in the 1200 block of Iowa Street. Police later arrested Johnson at a home in the 2500 block of Oxford Road.
