Firebirds shut out SM West in baseball

? J.D. Prochaska pitched a two-hit shutout, and Free State defeated Shawnee Mission West, 2-0, on Tuesday night in high school baseball.

Prochaska struck out 12 and walked two.

“Prochaska was absolutely phenomenal,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “He was a big-time pitcher. He absolutely controlled the game. He had command of three pitches. He worked quick. Our defense was very good behind him, when they had the opportunities. He certainly showed the potential he has.”

The Firebirds scored both runs in the fourth. Lee McMahon singled in the first run, and Anthony Miele drove in the second run with a ground ball.

“I thought it was a gritty effort by our kids, and I’m proud of their efforts,” Hill said.

The Firebirds (2-6) will play host to Shawnee Mission North at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
