Woman arrested downtown early Sunday after striking individuals with vehicle
A 24-year-old Atchison woman, Sophia Sherell Dew, was arrested about 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street as she was trying to leave the downtown area in her vehicle through a crowd of people during the victory celebration after Kansas University against Ohio State. District Attorney Charles Branson said the woman is charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery, but no one was injured. She was released from jail later Monday afternoon on $1,000 bond.
Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman, said Dew backed out of a parking stall and struck several individuals. Two men ended up on the trunk of the car, but they reported they were not injured, Murphree said.
