Local events planned to commemorate Sept. 11

In honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center is asking the local community to pledge one volunteer hour for each of the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks.

The project, Challenge 3,000, kicks off next Sunday and will run for six weeks, said Micki Chestnut, associate director of the volunteer center.

“How can we move our community toward health?” she said. “One of the best ways to do that is through service.”

The project is just one of several local efforts in the coming weeks designed to commemorate victims of the attacks.

Anyone interested in Challenge 3,000 can go online and “pledge” a certain amount of volunteer hours, and for each hour, volunteers will be sent the names of the victim their hours will honor.

For more information, contact Chestnut at communications@rhvc.org, or go to rhvc.org.
