Douglas County commissioners extend ban against outdoor burning
Douglas County commissioners on Wednesday extended a week-old burn ban, acknowledging that recent rains haven’t been enough to dampen the risk of fires in rural areas.
Commissioners voted to extend the ban they had approved last week. The ban prohibits campfires, trash fires and other outdoor burns in the unincorporated areas of the county.
County officials said the area had received welcome but relatively little precipitation in recent days: 0.15 inch Monday, 0.01 inch Tuesday and 0.11 inch through noon Wednesday.
Officials had surveyed fire chiefs from surrounding townships, and six of eight responding said they supported extending the ban through the coming weekend. Chiefs in Clinton and Wakarusa townships were opposed.
Violating the ban is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine and potential jail time.
