25 years ago: Temporary housing resource closes in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 7, 1986:

  • After only six months in operation, the Lawrence Community Peace House was closing. The board of organizers had regretfully agreed to shut down the facility, located at 204 W. 13th, saying that they had had “some hopes and expectations that weren’t fully realized.” One of the factors in the decision to close had been the announcement that the local Salvation Army would open its gymnasium to provide shelter for the homeless this winter.
  • Lawrence consumers who had purchased money orders from Kansas 7-Eleven stores were relieved to hear that they would be reimbursed for them. Many of the money orders had bounced after bankruptcy of the financial company backing them. Kansas Atty. Gen. Robert T. Stephan had recently announced that the parent company for 7-Eleven stores in a four-state region had agreed to reimburse the customers.
