25 years ago: ‘Community Peace House’ opens in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 21, 1986:

  • A house at 204 W. 13th Street had recently opened as the “Community Peace House.” The official mission of the house was described as “a group of people who, out of religious and personal conviction, are committed to work together to provide peace-making resources, educational programs and opportunities for non-violent religious bodies and other community groups.” Jane Ungerman and Jay Johnson, Peace House coordinators, said that volunteers were working to renovate the house in preparation for their next step of providing temporary housing for up to five people.
  • A bill had been approved by the Kansas House Ways and Means Committee that would make Washburn University a state university. However, the bill had stalled in the legislature and was probably not going to be considered this year, according to some area legislators. “Washburn coming into the regents system is a dead cookie,” said Sen. Wint Winter Jr., R-Lawrence.
