The City of Lawrence and Douglas County Senior Services are looking for volunteers for the annual Safe Winter Walkways program. The program matches volunteers with individuals who need assistance removing snow from their sidewalks and driveways. If you’re interested in volunteering, call 785-832-3338 or register as a volunteer online at lawrenceks.org. The program depends on volunteers and local residents being matched before bad weather so get signed up now if you’re available to help.

Immediate needs

• Project LIVELY with the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department is seeking a volunteer who can assist one of its elderly clients. An older gentleman who lives close to the KU campus is in need of help raking his front and back yards as well as assistance in sweeping out his carport. If you’re available to help out this client, contact Sarah Norman at 785-843-3060 or snorman@ldchealth.org.

• The Lawrence Art Guild Association’s 1109 Gallery is seeking volunteers to help staff the gallery during the holidays. The gallery is an all-volunteer, nonprofit operation that supports area artists, not just members. Help is also requested at the Holiday Art Fair on Saturday. Call 1109 Gallery at 785-856-2784 or leave a message for Linda Baranski at 785-887-6010.

• The Kansas Arthritis Foundation needs volunteers for its upcoming Jingle Bell Run on Dec. 11 in downtown Lawrence. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks along the 5K route and need no training. For more details or to get signed up, contact Jane Harris at 785-691-6990 or GIJANE50@aol.com.

• AARP Tax-Aide is seeking volunteers to assist with tax preparations next year for low-income and senior residents throughout the area. Volunteers will help prepare and file state and federal income tax returns at no cost to qualified taxpayers. You do not need to be an AARP member or have previous tax-preparation skills but should have basic computer skills. Volunteers receive free training and materials in January 2012 and are reimbursed for program-related expenses. The program is from Feb. 1 to April 15, 2012. For more information, please contact Lawrence District Coordinator Sarah Merriman at 785-832-0080.
