Give us names

To the editor:

An open letter to coach Turner Gill and the Lawrence Journal-World. Coach, before the 2010 season you announced that there would be no players’ name on jerseys. I can’t remember your exact nonsensical words of explanation, but they were to the effect that football is a team sport that doesn’t need or require individual identification. I thought (hoped) you would remedy your mind-set this year, but no. The J-W Sound Off tells us “never.”

In prior years the J-W printed a complete list of all players, their names, numbers and positions. This permitted us to identify a player by looking at the TV, then the list. But no, not this year. Now all we get is an abbreviated roster.

Coach, you’re out of touch. Seventy million “baby boomers” between the ages of 46 to 64, many more than in the past with hearing loss because of loud music, are affected. Our increasing numbers of aging experience slowness of recognition/cognition.

Coach, you are short-changing many of our football fans. On behalf of myself and so many others of similar circumstances, I just hope to see changes made in 2012.
