Lawrence man accused of flashing handgun, faces assault charges

Douglas County prosecutors Tuesday filed three aggravated assault charges against a 23-year-old Lawrence man who was accused of possessing a handgun in a Lawrence parking lot Monday night after an earlier altercation with several people inside a bar.

A judge set bond at $30,000 Tuesday for Bryan D. Roberts. Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said it was alleged Roberts was involved an altercation at 11:30 p.m. inside Saints Pub and Patio, 2329 Iowa, and Roberts was seen with a gun in the parking lot after leaving the bar. Three people are listed as being threatened by the man in the charges.

Police were called and told Roberts’ vehicle left the area. An officer took him into custody later in a parking lot in the 2400 block of West 25th Street. Sarna said police later determined the gun was passed off to two Lawrence men who had left the area, but police later found them at a nearby apartment complex and recovered the gun they believed Roberts had used. No shots were fired and no one was injured, Sarna said.

Roberts is next due in court at 2 p.m. Nov. 22.
