To the editor:

Another peaceful spring Sunday morning; cloudy, cool, slight breeze. Nice morning to sit and read the papers until … flicker, flash, DARK.

And so on Monday I read that Westar (“The Company That Perfected Darkness”) attributes yet another major outage to “equipment failure.” Perhaps instead of stuffing so-called “smart meters” down our collective throats, Westar ought to concentrate on keeping the lights on!

Absolutely correct! They have admitted that they know there are old lines just waiting to fail and the 6th Street substation has had frequent equipment failures in recent history. Why isn't more routine replacement of old wiring/equipment being done? Why isn't the city commission getting involved and demanding some answers and solutions from Westar regarding the problems? Summer is coming on, and AC units will soon be running round the clock, putting even more stress on the outdated grid in the older parts of Lawrence. If this problem doesn't get addressed, be prepared to curse and sweat in the dark while the food in your fridge rots.

Some potential reasons "why": 1- Westar keeps blowing off normal required maintenance so that they can inflate their dividend and continue to delude the public that all is dandy; ALSO, they use the ignored maintenance to try to convince our gutless KCC that they need a rate increase to do ... ummm... MAINTENANCE! 2- The City Commission is collectively even MORE gutless than the KCC. We really haven't had good aggressive candidates run for that in years, thus the ongoing crop of suckups.

Much of NE Lawrence is a lot like downtown Baghdad, including our "VIBRANT" [snort, choke, laugh) downtown.

Anyone else's power also go out this morning? On a dark, gray morning, it was a lot of fun getting ready for work in the dark.
