O’Brien smashes 2 HRs; FSHS?softball splits

? Samantha O’Brien blasted a pair of home runs and cashed in on six RBIs, and Free State’s softball team rolled Shawnee Mission Northwest, 9-3, in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Firebirds fell in the opener, 3-2.

O’Brien, a junior shortstop, leads the Sunflower League with four home runs this season. One of her home runs on Saturday was a grand slam. She’s hitting over .500 for the spring and leads the Firebirds in hits, homers and RBIs.

“She’s very capable of this,” Free State coach Lee Ice said. “Over the last two weeks, she’s really come on. (Saturday), she just so happened to hit the home runs with people on base, not from solo shots.”

O’Brien has three homers and nine RBIs in the past two weeks.

Free State (9-10) will face Lawrence High at 6:15 p.m. Monday at Kansas University’s Arrocha Ballpark.
