? All afternoon, Free State High swimmer Reilly Moore had been trying her hardest to ignore the raucous atmosphere at the Sunflower League championships and keep focused as she prepared for her events.

But as she accepted her medal and climbed to her place at the top of the podium after capturing first place in the 100 breaststroke, she finally cracked and a big grin broke out across her face.

“When I finally got up there, I was like, ‘OK, I need to stop being so serious,'” Moore said after swimming a season-best 1:09.78, the best time in the field by nearly two seconds. “Because this is a great moment in my life, and I just need to have fun.”

Moore also took third in the 50 freestyle to lead FSHS to a fifth-place finish (102 points) at the league championships on Saturday at California Trail Middle School.

Shawnee Mission East had a dominant showing and won with 372 points, while Olathe Northwest (240) and Olathe East (201) rounded out the top three. Miranda Rohn and Annie Odrowski guided Lawrence High to seventh place (86 points).

Rohn took third in the 100 back at 1:02.08 and sixth in the 200 IM at 2:23.06, while Odrowski — only a freshman — took fifth in the 500 free (5:32.95) and sixth in the 100 back (1:07.25).

Rohn and Odrowski both swam on LHS’ medaling relay teams: the fifth-place finishing 200 medley and the sixth-place finishing 400 free.

“It’s kind of shocking to come here and swim against all of these older girls,” Odrowski said. “But hopefully in a year or two I’ll be able to move up.”

Free State’s Kara Mishler swam two impressive times: third place (1:00.73) in the 100 fly and seventh place (2:20.98) in the 200 IM.

Along with Mishler’s time in the 200 IM, Free State’s time of 2:00.85 in the 200 medley relay was among the top six in the field, but because they came in the consolation finals, the Firebirds weren’t eligible to medal.

“What a turnaround,” FSHS coach Annette McDonald said. “That was their best time of the season (for Hana Arch, Morgan Miller, Mishler and Moore).”

Free State’s 400 free relay team also dropped time and finished fifth at 3:56.17, while Lawrence finished sixth at 4:12.32.

The only two city divers to compete were Annie Soderberg and Grace Oliver, who took seventh and 12th, respectively, for the Firebirds.

FSHS and LHS will compete in the Class 6A state meet on May 19 at the Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka.
