Olathe South tops Free State

? Cody Kukuk went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, but Free State High’s baseball team fell, 5-4, at Olathe South on Tuesday.

“It’s little things that are creeping up and getting us,” Free State coach Mike Hill said. “Four of the five runs they scored they got as a result of walks and errors.”

The Firebirds dropped to 12-4 overall and 5-4 in the Sunflower League.

Kukuk also was Free State’s starting pitcher. He pitched five innings, issued four walks and struck out six, but did not factor into the decision. Colin Toalson (4-2) took the loss.

“Offensively, we’re struggling,” Hill said. “We’re inconsistent. I was proud of the kids and the fact that they battled back to tie it in the seventh (at 4-4).”

The Falcons scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win.

Free State will play host to Rockhurst (Mo.) at 4:30 p.m. today in a makeup from a River City Festival game that was rained out.
