Flags, firecrackers herald news in Lawrence

A small crowd of men gathered in the Chi Omega fountain on the Kansas University campus shortly after word broke that Osama bin Laden had been killed.

Gripping American flags and a small sign, they chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A!” to passing motorists, before walking back down West Campus Road with the American flag held high.

Another group had gathered in front of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, milling about and listening as the sound of gunshots and firecrackers echoed across Lawrence.

Small crowds also gathered along Massachusetts Street, most waving flags or chanting at passing motorists.
