Census numbers reveal more detailed picture of Lawrence
There are a lot more empty houses and apartments in Lawrence than there used to be — but still a lot fewer than there are in many other Kansas towns.
Hispanics and Asians make up a bigger part of Lawrence than they used to, but blacks do not.
And children under age 18 aren’t quite as prominent in Lawrence as they were a decade ago.
That’s a glimpse of Lawrence as seen through the first round of data from the 2010 U.S. Census, which was released last week. The numbers — which included much-watched population totals — also provided basic information about race, age and housing totals. Even more detailed information will be released in coming months, but for now, here’s a look at what the Census says about Lawrence:
Nobody’s home
Lawrence’s housing vacancy rate:
• 2010: 6.8 percent or 2,532 units
• 2000: 4.2 percent or 1,373 units
