Walthall third at state for FSHS bowling

? Free State’s Justin Walthall bowled the highest series of his high school career at the best possible time, rolling a 725 to finish third at the Class 6A state bowling championships on Friday at Northrock Lanes.

Walthall received a medal for his third-place finish.

“He did a wonderful job today,” FSHS coach Anita Carlson said. “It’s exciting to see him do as well as he did. This was it. This was the last time out for him, and he did what he needed to do.”

After starting with a 205, Walthall put together games of 266 and 254 to edge out Washburn Rural’s Trevor Baumgartner — who bowled a 300 game in his series — by two pins for third.

Nick Conrad, Free State’s other boys participant, rolled a 593 series.

On the girls side, Free State’s Alyson Butler posted a 523 series, while McKenzie Dever bowled a 386 series.

“The girls went out and gave it their best shot,” Carlson said. “They plugged through and worked hard and finished out as hard as they could.”
