Kansas officials assess flood, storm damage

? Federal, state and local emergency management agencies are assessing the extent of damage to Kansas communities and agriculture land from the latest round of storms and flooding.

Sharon Watson, spokeswoman for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, says that assessment teams are beginning preliminary work Friday to determine the amount of property lost or damaged by storms.

Storms that began Wednesday dumped heavy rains on north-central and northeast Kansas, with some locations getting close to 10 inches of rain. Several creeks, streams and rivers were out of their banks causing some flooding in farmland and parts of Manhattan and Ogden.

Watson says the assessments will determine if the state will be eligible for federal assistance to help pay the cost of responding to the flooding and recovering losses.
