State reopens I-70 west of Topeka; driver in custody with minor injuries

The Kansas Highway Patrol Wednesday afternoon took a man who barricaded himself in a vehicle on Interstate 70 west of Topeka into custody with minor injuries, and the state reopened the 25-mile stretch of the interstate at 4:15 p.m., said Kim Qualls, a Kansas Department of Transportation spokeswoman.

The situation caused the state to close a major stretch of Interstate 70 west of Topeka for seven hours.

The highway was closed from Auburn Road in Shawnee County west to Kansas Highway 99 in Wabaunsee County.

Capt. Art Wilburn says the patrol closed the highway shortly after 8 a.m. in both directions west of Topeka to protect motorists in case there was gunfire.

A highway patrol spokesman said later an armed man, 45-year-old Paul R. Berry of Canton, Mich., had barricaded himself inside a motor home near Maple Hill, told troopers he had a weapon and made suicidal threats after a traffic stop for driving erratically a little after 8 a.m.

Troopers forcibly entered the mobile home around 3:30 p.m. and arrested Berry, who was combative, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a Topeka hospital, a KHP spokesman said. Troopers also recovered a weapon in the RV.

This was the second time in three days that the state has closed the same stretch of the interstate. On Monday, the same section was closed for nine hours due to a bomb threat at a Junction City hotel and investigation of a vehicle on the highway.

Federal and state officials didn’t find any explosives on Monday, and one man was arrested.

Wednesday traffic was detoured onto K-99 and U.S. Highway 24.
