Wichita plant accidentally releases chemicals into Little Arkansas River

? Officials at a Wichita treatment plant are trying to determine how 2,300 gallons of chemicals were released into the Little Arkansas River.

The managers of the plant say the chemicals released Wednesday did not pose a risk of human health.

Denice Bruce, a spokeswoman for Professional Engineering Consultants, said a broken line leaked the chemicals into a holding basin at the city’s aquifer storage and recovery water treatment plant. She says it’s unclear how the accident happened.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the chemicals were sodium bisulfite, which is used to neutralize chlorine, and sodium hypochlorite solution, which cleans filters at the plant.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment was notified of the spill.
