Nuclear safety

To the editor:

Commencing on July 2, we have been informed by the Journal-World how “U.S. regulators have weakened safety rules,” “Tritium leaks found at many nuclear plants” and other problems with our nuclear facilities. No mention was made of the fact that during the 60 years that the industry has been in operation there has never been a single human life lost in an American nuclear power plant accident. What other major industry in the U.S. can make that statement? Commercial airlines? Mining? Railroads? Trucking, etc.?

What is an acceptable replacement? Coal-fired plants? Wind? Solar? If windmills are the proper replacement, should our nuclear-powered Navy go back to sails for power?

The real question is, as nuclear and coal plants age and are phased out, will the common people lose their freedom to have electricity? Will only the elite (Al Gore, Warren Buffet, etc.) have this privilege?
