The annual CPA picnic in Eudora enters its 103rd year this week, and the event’s main organizer anticipates a strong turnout.

“We will have a great time over the coming days and plenty of entertainment and fun for the entire family over the course of it,” said Jerry Trober, who’s headed the annual celebration for 23 years. “It’s a great time to celebrate Eudora and the heritage of our city.”

CPA stands for the Cattlemen’s Protective Association. The group was formed in the late 19th century to protect the town from cattle rustlers and horse thieves.

Here’s a quick rundown of activities:

• Events start Thursday at 6 p.m., with carnival games and rides.

• Friday kicks off with a morning golf tournament at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence. The Children’s Parade starts rolling down Main Street at 7 p.m. Registration starts at 6:15 p.m. in the city park at Seventh and Main. No motorized vehicles are allowed in the parade.

Carnival rides will open after the parade, and St. Paul United Church of Christ will sell hamburgers, hot dogs and desserts in the concession stand.

• Carnival rides and concessions will be open downtown Saturday afternoon and evening. The grand parade starts at 7 p.m., and registration for it is at 6 p.m. in the Laws Field parking lot at 16th and Elm streets. The parade route will head north up Elm, then west at 10th to Main, where it will head north again. The parade concludes at Seventh and Main.
