Busker Festival preview show to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

July 13, 2011

Lawrence Busker Fest weekend will kick off with a preview show starting at 7 p.m. Aug. 18.

The show, with proceeds benefiting Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Douglas County, is at Abe and Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St., and features a strongwoman, a sword swallower, a one-man band and an acrobatic juggler.

Tickets for the preview show are $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. After-party tickets are available for an additional $10; patrons get a chance to mingle with the performers after the crowd leaves.

The festival starts the night of Aug. 19 and runs through the afternoon of Aug. 21, and will include more performers than last year with fire eaters, whip artists, strongman stunts, jugglers, musicians, magicians, mimes and dancers.

Performances are scheduled at various places along Massachusetts Street with workshops and demos for children held the morning of Aug. 20 at the Lawrence Arts Center for anyone wanting to know more about the life of a street performer.

The busker festival should quietly go the way of the dodo bird. This is not something that adds to the quality of life in Lawrence.

What would you rather see?

And why does something that thousands of people find enjoyable get your panties in such a twist?

my wife and i attended the busker fest last year and really enjoyed ourselves, i cant wait for this year. we are going to bring in family members from around the area to see for themselves. If you cant back a truly lawrence event like this- then all i can say is get the hell out- you do not belong in this town, move your ass 25 miles west to Brownbackistan.

Every year I think, "man I would love to go see this," and every year I either forget or don't make it out to Lawrence. Hopefully this year I will actually get out to Mass. to see what I've been missing.
