— Topeka police are investigating a pedestrian's death as a possible homicide.

Fifty-two-year-old Robin Nicholson of Topeka died Sunday night after she was hit by a car. Police say she was trying to retrieve a stray dog when she was hit by a white SUV that then sped away.

Police Lt. Steve Taylor told The Topeka Capital-Journal that the case is being investigated as a homicide.

Nicholson died after being taken by ambulance to Stormont-Vail Hospital.

This was a terrible tragedy, and I certainly hope that Robin's family can go on, and remember her fondly. The memories of ourselves that we leave for others are the only thing that we will ever really leave them with.

But this tragedy does remind me of a very solemn moment from my childhood, which happened the day after we got our new puppy, which all three of us children had wanted so badly for so long.

My mother gathered us all together, and it was very obvious to all of us that she was giving us parental orders that were never to be violated.

She said, "If she ever runs out on the highway, you kids are not to go after her."
