Welcome to Wednesday Waifs where each week we at Lawrence.com with the help of the Lawrence Humane Society highlight a specific pet in need of a home. This week's entry is Chi Chi, a spirited terrier mix that looks decidedly like a chihuahua or maybe a baby deer with her stark white undercoat. Chi Chi can be adopted from the Lawrence Humane Society right now for $35 as part of a special promotion.

There are plenty of animals available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society, 1805 E. 19th St.

From watching the video and hearing her characteristics, I am certain she is a rat terrier mix. Her head looks classic rattie--which is (IMO) so much more attractive than the chihuahua "apple head," shorter snout, and (usually) buggy eyes. She may have some chihuahua mixed in--the curling tail could be a clue, but I would lay money that she is mostly rat terrier.

If she is, she will be a wonderful pet. They are very entertaining and have a powerful instinct to eliminate any vermin--they go nuts when they see a squirrel or smell a mole under the lawn. The story goes that Teddy Roosevelt had them in the White House to take care of a rat infestation. They are a lot sturdier than many tiny breeds. They may be small, but they're neither froufrou nor wimpy. They like to talk (they make lots of strange vocalizations) and they make nests to sleep in if they have access to blankets or a handy basket of laundry. They are also wonderful for agility training as they are intelligent and very athletic.

Hope Chi Chi finds a good home soon.

Thank God for Chi's adorable picture located just below a depressing headline. I needed a cute distraction from impending doom. Matbe that's how Brownback should play all his cards, with cute pictures of Chi chi on the back.
