Great neighbors

To the editor:

I love my neighbors!

I recently moved to Lawrence. This morning I went outside to shovel after the lovely 6-inch snowfall. My next-door neighbor Eric was using his snowblower on my sidewalk and driveway, and worked until the wheel fell off. Later this morning I went out to shovel some more, and two men in a pickup stopped and asked if they could help. Yippee! Their names are Dusty and Chris, one a firefighter and one a teacher, whom I had never met before! They did a fine job of clearing my sidewalk and driveway.

I am pleased to live in Lawrence and thank God for my great neighbors!

Yeah, and when my sister went to Europe she was invited to stay the night by several locals.

Sounds like you have found your level in Douglas County, Susan-- if you appreciate frighteningly ignorant people who will fearlessly approach complete strangers and offer "help." They have been trained up to behave this way by backwoods, unsophisticated parents who don't realize that most of the world is justifiably wary of strangers who too personal too quickly.

I can't see that such officious and presumptuous behavior embodies the golden rule. To check my theory just reveal the slightest hesitation- or God forbid---annoyance about strange people who aggressively stick their noses up into others' business and these would-be "Good Samaritans" will often turn into rabid attack dogs. They fail my key tests for dealing with people who I don't know and making new friends --good judgment, competence, and intelligence.

This post fails my test for making sense.
