Task force presented to Douglas County Commission emphasizes need for heritage resource inventory

Ken Grotewiel, facilitator of the Natural and Cultural Heritage Task Force, presented the group’s preliminary report to county commissioners on Wednesday.

One item Grotewiel stressed was the need for a countywide inventory on heritage resources. The inventory would involve culling information from other databases and record piles to put all of the material into one place.

“There is a huge amount of information out there, but not all of it is one place,” says Grotewiel. “It’s on ongoing inventory that needs to be done.”

Currently the task force is charged with earmarking $350,000 that Douglas County Commissioners allocated for heritage conservation last year. The preliminary report, presented at Wednesday’s meeting, outlines ways that money could be spent.

Task force members also spoke on how they will fetch adequate and consistent funding in the future. Larry McElwain, task force member, recommended that commissioners explore other funding sources, including a locally approved sales tax.

The task force encourages people to respond to its preliminary report.

“We would really like input,” says Grotewiel. “We do want people to comment.”

The task force will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
