Man faces attempted second-degree murder charge in South Pointe shooting case

A Douglas County judge on Friday ordered a 26-year-old Lawrence man to stand trial on an attempted second-degree murder charge in connection with a Dec. 5 shooting at a south Lawrence apartment complex.

A trial is scheduled for April 18 for Dustin D. Walker on charges of attempted second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

District Judge Paula Martin made the decision Friday after a hearing when shooting victim Darrick Dew, 23, Lawrence, testified that someone shot him as he entered a party to find his sister early on Dec. 5 at South Pointe Apartments, 2310 W. 26th St.

Dew, who was in a wheelchair, said he did not see who shot him. He said he spent two weeks in a Topeka hospital and still receives treatment for his wounds.

David Melton, a chief assistant district attorney, said a witness earlier at the preliminary hearing testified and said the shooter matched Walker’s description. Lawrence police arrested Walker four days later.

The felon-in-possession charge stems from a 2008 aggravated battery related to a domestic violence incident.
