Poor call
To the editor:
I am a Jayhawk fan, and nothing pleases me more than a loss by Missouri or K-State. Even a diehard Jayhawk fan, however, must admit that the penalty incurred for a salute in legitimate celebration of a potential game-tying touchdown cannot be considered, by definition, excessive. To wit:
Salute — To make a gesture of greeting or respect (in this case to the fans in the stands).
Celebration — To observe an occasion (or event) with appropriate ceremony or festivity (in this case the potential game-tying touchdown).
Excessive — Exceeding a normal, usual, reasonable or proper limit. (Uh, right … celebrating a touchdown is not normal, usual, reasonable or proper?)
The excessive celebration rule, when poorly interpreted, undermines both the integrity and the fun of the game.
Rock Chalk.
