February 18, 2011

The 2011 charity benefit auction for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is planned for Saturday evening at the gym in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 Bob Billings Parkway. The annual trivia tournament will be Sunday.

Doors for the auction open at 5:30 p.m., the silent auction begins at 6 p.m. and the live auction begins at 7 p.m. There is a suggested $25 donation at the door. Maceli’s will cater the auction.

Items up for auction include golf for up to three people with Sheahon Zenger, Kansas University athletic director; a trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on the Gulf Coast; a guitar autographed by Carlos Santana; and a child’s entry to the Bill Self summer basketball camp. There are more than 180 items to bid on at the auction.

Money raised at the event will benefit this year’s charities chosen by the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee: Cooper’s Cause Foundation, Imagine Drop-In Childcare and Junior Achievement.

Emcees for the auction will be Hank Booth, Chris Merrill from “Merrill in the Morning,” Lawrence Journal-World columnist Cathy Hamilton and 6News Meteorologist Matt Elwell.

The annual trivia tournament starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Eagles Lodge, 1803 W. Sixth St. Entry is $100 per team, with at least four members. For an additional $10, a brisket buffet will be served at 5:30 p.m. To register a team, call 749-6677 and leave a message.

Playa del Carmen is not on the Gulf side of Mexico. It's on the Caribbean side next to Cozumel. This area is known as the Mayan Riviera.
