To the editor:

The following is a quote from a Kansas Democratic Party release of Feb. 14.

“On Tuesday, Feb. 8, during testimony in front of the Kansas House Federal and State Affairs Committee, Rep. Connie O’Brien told a story about an experience she had with someone who was supposedly an undocumented immigrant. Here is the transcript:

“Rep. Sean Gatewood, D-Topeka — ‘Can you expand on how you could tell that they were illegal?’

“Rep. Connie O’Brien, R-Tonganoxie — ‘Well she wasn’t black, she wasn’t Asian and she had the olive complexion.’”

Even if this is “out of context,” there is no context that would excuse such a remark. Apparently, there are no black illegal immigrants, there are no Asian illegal immigrants and all persons of “olive complexion” are illegal immigrants in the eyes of Rep. O’Brien.

This statement is so far beyond the pale that it deserves more than a public apology. It deserves censure.

It was a rather silly comment by Reid, who is known for making silly comments. But it wasn't racist. The situations are in no way comparable.

What was silly in Reid's case was primarily that he said it out loud to reporters. But the fact is his comments were a fairly accurate portrayal of how many voters in the US view blacks and black culture, although it was rather awkwardly expressed. The remarks certainly didn't indicate any racist leanings on Reid's part.

That's not the case with O'Brien.

really.... i am an American and am very very tired of being asked if i speak a different language on the phone all the time and for them to ask her how she knew they were illegal aliens is in itself crazy... if it walks like a duck sounds like a duck and looks like a duck what must it be ???? we do have legal ways of coming into the country so why not try them... and yes i do believe there is a place for them in America just like the Irish, Jewish, Italians,,,, in fact all races that have come to this great place we call AMERICA thanks..w

So you agree with O'Brien that someone with olive complexion must be an illegal immigrant?

The Democrats want to censure a Republican. This is news???

Rules pushed through by House Republicans enable caucuses to shut the press and public out of their meetings. Democrats offered two amendments to protect government transparency and block this rule change. The first amendment would have stricken the closed caucus rule completely, requiring both Republicans and Democrats to continue practicing open government at all times. After Republicans overwhelmingly voted the measure down, a second amendment was offered to keep only Democratic caucuses open. This proposal was also defeated by Republicans.

“Everything we do in this building should be done in the light of day,” said House Democratic Leader Paul Davis, Lawrence. “If Republicans want to conduct their business in secret, that’s their prerogative. Democrats don’t believe this is a responsible practice.”

With a projected deficit of $492 million and many critical services being placed on the chopping block, Kansans deserve to hear their elected officials discuss these issues.

Many of these same republicans who voted to close their meetings ran on the message of government openness and transparency. They have since thrown promises aside and chosen to operate in secret. Contact your Legislator today and demand that they live up to their campaign promise. Keep government open, honest and transparent!

So transparency in government is a liberal value, but not a conservative one? That's good to know - thanks for clearing it up.
