First Student Inc. will remain the district’s provider of bus transportation for the next five years under a contract extension approved Monday night by the Lawrence school board. The extension takes effect July 1.

The contract calls for rates to decrease 0.6 percent in year one, followed by increases ranging from 1.5 percent to 5 percent for each of the next four years.

Well Jack, the fact that you have no idea that almost everyone of those drivers and staff are probably the same ones as when the district operated the system wouldnt be a shock to you would it Jack? The fact that the company buys many services and products locally, pays local sales taxes, state fuel taxes, state license fees, local real estate taxes, payroll taxes and income taxes when government agencies and operations don't did'nt miss your mind did it Jack ? Our education system is supposed to be built on classroom education. Transportation is a competitive business and the companies that provide this service take this public trust very seriously. Non core services that help "save" taxpayers money and generate new taxes are good for the system and good for the community. Hold them to high standards and hold them accountable, yes for sure, thats the right answer. Purchasing efficencies and better run businesses who pay taxes should be encouraged not dissed on.

The school bus contract is costing somewhere between $4 - $4.5 million. So was observed last night. What I found curious about this approving this motion was no dollars were discussed and no dollar amount was included in the motion.

The cost surfaced after a question from a concerned taxpayer. It is a flexible budget item depending on how many students are riders each day. In the end no one knows for sure until the the buses stop for the season.
