Mizzou revenge

December 25, 2011

To the editor:

In response to Ben H. Barteldes (Public Forum, Dec. 22), who favors renaming Missouri Street by Memorial Stadium for Coach Fambrough Street, do you know your history and the burden you are placing on others? The state streets in Lawrence are plotted according to when the states entered the union. It is not about Missouri’s football team.

Yes, they left a bitter taste in KU’s mouth by leaving the conference, but this retaliation of renaming the street by the stadium is a burden to those living there.  The “honor” will require those living on this street to submit a change-of-address for bills, banks and other correspondence. The “honor”  will require more detailed directions to their homes.

I have no qualms about naming a street for a former coach, but I would hope the commissioners aren’t as concerned about your vote as they are about the many more citizens they would affect.

But the states of the confederacy were left out of this naming scheme.

I think you'll find that the original naming of streets very obviously excluded several states of the confederacy-- there is no S. or N. Carolina, Georgia, or Virginia-- and no Maryland either, which didn't secede, even though it was a slave state.

My guess is that Tennessee and Kentucky (along with other) streets were added after the war, and after the original naming of the streets.

Maryland is between Delaware and Oregon.

gccs14r, Maryland is east of Delaware St. It bounded by Parnell Park on the east. No Oregon street near it.

If you draw parallel lines down Delaware, Maryland, and Oregon, you'll see where Maryland would be if it were a through street. Before the maps were updated, part of the Allen Press parking lot was also listed as being Maryland Street. Anyway, the statement I was countering was one that said that there is no Maryland Street. That's clearly not the case.

I guess I had forgotten about that couple block stretch of Maryland St..

Regardless, Maryland clearly was excluded, along with several other states of the South, from the original naming scheme for N-S streets, which was my original point.

Whenever considering changing the name of a street, I have two suggestions. 1. The person must be dead for a period of time long enough that we might reflect upon their full body of work. 2. To the person on the city commission proposing the name change; it must be the street upon which they live. That way the concerns of the writer will be shared at least by the person proposing the name change.

Just curious-- how many of the states don't have a street named after them in Lawrence?

Threre has been talk of naming a street after coach on campus. Is that not enough?

Abdu Omar 6 years, 5 months ago

Yes, it should be on campus. Instead of West Campus Drive, change it to Fambrough Drive or Street there by honoring him, and not confusing the other 80,000 or so in Lawrence. Billings Parkway was enough which confuses visitors to Lawrence every day.

What ever Lisa, you don't even live here.

Don was a good player, a nice guy, but not a great coach.

Renaming 15th st. has caused enough confusion - let it rest.
