City to look at proposal to add turn lane at Sixth and Iowa

City commissioners will consider moving ahead with a project to add a left-turn lane on Sixth Street where it intersects with Iowa Street.

City engineers unsuccessfully sought state grant money to help pay for the $900,000 project that would add a turn lane for westbound motorists on Sixth Street. But engineers are recommending that the city proceed with the project even without state assistance. The project is expected to reduce the average wait time for a motorist seeking to turn left to about 30 seconds, which is about a minute less than it is today. If approved, design work on the project would start in 2012, and construction would begin in 2013.
