To the editor:

On Dec. 1, when I picked up my paper, I fully expected to have to wring the water out of it. The paper stated that coach Leach had decided to coach at Washington instead of Kansas and I fully expected our sports editor, Tom Keegan, to be crying tears as big as light bulbs and flooding the sports section of the Journal-World.

After at least four or five days of nothing but a promotion for coach Leach to come to Kansas, some of us wondered if Keegan was an employee of Kansas University or at least a member of the committee to locate the next KU football coach. He was so insistent that Leach was the best and only fit for KU’s next coach that I wonder what his qualifications are. I suppose it’s possible that part of his job as sports editor is to help hire a new coach. I’m sure his comments over the past football season helped get Turner Gill fired.

I’m one that feels that coach Gill was not given a fair chance to develop a winning team. I remember Lou Holtz saying it takes at least five years.

Big donor money runs KU sports - especially basketball and football - and big donor money wanted Gill out.

Great letter, Howard. And when you read today's article you can see the negativity we will be faced with from Keegan from here on out.
