Act of kindness

To the editor:

I just want to thank the lady (first name Betty) who rescued me Friday. I stopped at the post office before going to my doctor’s appointment. After mailing my letter, I was unable to get my car started and I had a doctor’s appointment in 30 minutes.

After listening to my sad story, Betty immediately transported me across town to my doctor’s appointment. I tried to pay her, but she wouldn’t take it. So I want to thank you again Betty. I have a feeling you have the Christmas spirit year round. I hope I can pass your kind spirit on to someone else who needs help.

Good thing you made it there safely. Betty could have knocked you in the head and stolen your purse. Times are tough out there. May I suggest calling a cab if this happens again.

Nice. You really should back it up. What has the letter writer been doing wrong that would necessitate a trip to the Dr. in the first place. You are a ray sunshine.

I'm afraid the first poster brings up reasonable safety concerns. Those who refuse to recognize this are the unreasonable ones and must enjoy terrorizing strangers and making the public space unlivable and unfree. That's what makes Lawrence such a scary place: strangers are aggressive to the point of being physically violating in the way they assume others should appreciate their unwanted and insulting attentions. Actually, they are ones who have drunk the offensive cultural Kool-aid to believe being patronizing equals good manners.. I've lived in many places where people have good judgment about when, why, and how to approach strangers, but Lawrence isn't one of them.
