Kansas University Provost Jeff Vitter Tuesday surprised four more KU professors with Kemper Fellowships that reward outstanding teaching.

Winners included Anna Neill, associate professor of English; Andrea Herstowski, associate professor of design; Robert Ward IV, associate professor of molecular biosciences; and Arvin Agah, professor of electrical engineering and computer science.

Those winners join Jorge Perez, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese, who was awarded the first fellowship on Monday.

The fellowships, which come with a $7,500 award, are made possible by an annual gift of $37,500 from the William T. Kemper Foundation and $37,500 in matching funds from KU Endowment.

The university is awarding 10 fellowships in all, including seven on the Lawrence campus and three at KU Medical Center.

KU officials, typically accompanied by representatives of KU Endowment and the Kemper Foundation, surprise professors with the awards by presenting it to them during one of their scheduled classes.

This year marks the 16th time the fellowships have been awarded to outstanding professors.
